Coming Up!

Coming up this week...

it is Sports Day! Tuesday the 31st is Sports Day for Year 1! We are all very excited. Remember your PE kit on Tuesday.

Because of Sports Days there is no regular swimming or PE this week.

In English we will be re writing the ending for The Enormous Turnip.

In Maths we are learning about family of facts.

In Science we are going to be naming garden flowers found in the UK and the UAE.

In art we are going to start to look at Van Gough's Sunflowers.

Paperless Learning

On Thursday as part of our week on sustainability we tried to use no paper. It was really difficult and sometimes we did have to use paper. In the afternoon we found a way to do our work without paper.

We were learning about Australia because it was Australia Day in Australia and being an international school a lot of our friends are from Australia. We were going to draw the Australian flag. We each got an ipad and drew the flags using 'Show Me'. We enjoyed using the ipads to draw and we think our learning was even better than if we used paper.

Can you suggest any other ways we could be sustainable in our classrooms? Leave us a comment down below.

"Tell me and I'll forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin

Today the Larks learnt to use the Show Me app to become involved in their learning as a class. They used it to teach each other how to do missing number problems. Ayesha and Miss Gorman worked together to create a story about 10 lollipops. Check it out below and leave a comment to let Ayesha know how amazing her 'Show Me' is.

Have you ever thought?

Have you ever thought what do you do when the answer isn't at the end of a maths problem.

What if the missing number is in the middle? Today Year 1 have started to learn about these problems.

Watch this quest video to see how we can solve them with pictures. We could do the same thing with counters or blocks.

Here a a challenge question for any super year 1 mathematicians. 17 + ? = 30 Let us know your answer in the comments below and maybe even leave us missing number problem.

Coming Up!

It is Sustainability Week!

This week we are going to look at what sustainability is and how we can help the world with sustainability. If you have any ideas for us we would love to hear about them in the comments.

This week we are also going to make an effort to thank all of our teachers. We will learn how to write the words Thank You and we will be extra appreciative of the team at Al Yasmina Academy.

In writing this week we are continuing to write great sentences.

In maths we are working on number problems with missing numbers. Eg. 10 + ? = 13

It's going to be an exciting and sustainable week ahead!

Our New Working Wall

Larks are very excited to have a new working wall. It is another space where we can work. It helps us to keep practicing our key skills and to record and share our ideas with other people in our class. We are very thankful to the maintenance team at Al Yasmina for helping get this ready for us in the holidays.

Tell us what you think we could practice on our new wall in the comments down below.

The Enormous Turnip

Year One are reading the story The Enormous Turnip. We have been doing lots of different learning with this story. We have be learning to retell the story in the correct order. We know there are lots of different versions of this story. Here is one that is on youtube.

We are really enjoying the story. Check back in over the next few weeks and see what else we are doing.

Can you leave us a comment and tell us what lessons this story can teach us?

Pirate Day

We finished of last term with a mighty arrrghhh! We transformed into pirates for the day. We had so much fun and made a million memories.

In the morning we rotated around different activities outside. We had a science activity investigating things that float and sink on a pirate ship, we played a pirate games, we climbed and moved like pirates, we had a treasure hunt were we found yummy treasure and we did a pirate drive.

Inside we had fun in our classes making treasure chests, colouring pirates, decorating pirate biscuits, making treasure maps, singing pirate songs and pretending to be pirates.

One of the highlights of the day was Pirate Pat coming into Year One. He snuck in and told us all about his adventures and how to be a pirate. He was a bit scary at first but then we decided maybe Pirate Pat was a good pirate because he had learnt from his mistakes. We did tell security and the management of the school that Pirate Pat was on the loose though...just in case...we don't want a pirate on the loose in our school.

During the day our teachers had lots of pirate battles and we tied up some unsuspecting visitors to pirate day.

We had so much fun and it was a great way to finish up an amazing pirate filled term.
