Maths Morning Fun!

Look at all the fun Year One had on Tuesday morning. The children loved showing off their number knowledge to all of the parents that visited the classrooms.

Phonics Phonics Phonics . . . it can be fun!

Today in Miss Gorman's phonics class we were revising the sounds ar, or and ur.

One of our favourite revision games is 'Sort and Find'.

To play you need  to work with a partner and take a pile of words and sort them into 3 sounds. Then Miss Gorman calls out a word and you have to try to find the word before your partner. Once you have the word you have to justify to your partner why it is the right word. Often we do this by sounding out all of the sounds, if we still aren't sure we can add zips and buttons to justify that we are right.

It's a tricky game and you don't always win but it is loads of fun to practice our phonics this way and we share loads of smiles and laughs when we play this game. Check out our smiles below, we know learning can be fun!

It's a process

Writing is always a process.

Have I heard or seen this type of writing?

Can I think of what to write about?

Can I plan it out?

Can I say each sentence?

Can I make it better?

In Year One this week we are right in the middle of this writing process. We've seen it, heard it, said it and today we planned it.

Tomorrow . . . we write it!

These are photos of one of our planning processes. We took our old plan that we knew really really well. We changed it to fit our new writing and then we ordered our sentences.

Each box is one whole sentence and each picture is an action to help us remember the sentence.

Constructing in the Shared Area

A few children choose to play with the wooden blocks today in the shared area today.

Katrina and Augustine built a castle city. They we discussing all of the different parts the castle and the city needed. Every block had an important position.

The stories from inside the castle walls were very interesting.

Wow! What a discussion these four had!

Arnav, Younus, Katrina and Mansour had an amazing discussion today in their guided reading. They were reading a book called "A Day in India". Arnav is from India and recently went there to visit his family so told Younus, Katrina and Mansour stories about the photos in the book and they had loads of questions. In the end they decided that some things are the same in the UAE and India but there are lots of things that are different. Arnav told us that some taxis don't have doors and shops aren't in malls.
Arnav, Katrina, Younus and Mansour all contirbuted great ideas and thoughts to the discussion. Miss Gorman really enjoyed just being able to listen as these great readers lead their own guided reading session.

Umm Al Emarat Park was fun!

As you can see we had lots of fun playing at the park.

We also learnt lots about the different types of plants that grow in the UAE. Which tree is the national tree of the UAE? Can you remember what it is used for?
