We need your help!

Year One want to make mindful breathing wands in our shared area.

To do this we need to collect cardboard tubes. Do you have any finished glad wrap, toilet rolls, kitchen roll or anything else with a cardboard tube?

Please pass these tubes on to any of the Year 1 teachers.

When we begin to make our mindful breathing wands we will share them with you.

Mystery Readers!

The Cuckoos and Sparrows had a mystery pirate reader last week. All of the children had an amazing time listening to the mystery reader and really enjoyed having a pirate read them a story and show them a bit about pirates.
Thanks mystery reader, we loved having you along.

If you would like to be a mystery reader please let us know by emailing your class teacher.

Homework Show and Tell

Doves class tried something new today; we shared our homework as a collective group, because there was so much of it!  This gave us all an opportunity to look at everything that had been handed in, including the many wonderfully creative pirate ships we've had so far.  Take a look...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Rowdha - "I like the crow's nest on top of Neve's ship."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Tarek - "Meera's story is really good."

It was great to be able to all contribute our thoughts, ideas and opinions on how well we did and what we could do to improve next time.

We all prefer sharing our homework this way.

Let's see who will share their homework next week...

What happens when you subtract with a pirate?

We are watching this video in maths this week. We love subtraction and we love it even more when we can use pirates!

We would love to share this with you and show you how we subtract. If you know a Lark, Sparrow, Cuckoo, Dove or Robin ask us about it!

What's happening in science?

Take a look at the fantastic science learning that we have been doing.

First we played the animal characteristics game (available in the website links section of this blog). It was lots of fun because we competed against each other to see which team could get the most correct.

We then sorted the characteristics of animals into the groups mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian. Do you know which characteristics make an animal a reptile or an amphibian?

Is a dolphin a fish or a mammal?
Which characteristics make cats belong to the mammal group?

Which characteristics make rabbits belong to the mammal group?

Coming Up this week!

In the Year One classrooms this week children will be learning...

in maths to continue to work on subtraction including practising the skill of counting backwards.
in English to self assess, editing and improving our Goldilocks stories.
in science to identify animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
in mindup to mindfully listen, breathe and look.

It's going to be a fun and busy week in Year One. Thanks for checking in with us.

National Flag Day

We have had such an exciting UAE Flag Day.

We had flags to hold during the national anthem this morning, this was very exciting.

In assembly we learnt about the UAE flag. Did you know there was a competition to design the UAE flag?

Then before lunch the whole school went outside to the astro-turf and watch the flag being raised, sung the national anthem and listening to other formal proceedings with the whole academy.

It has been a fun day thinking about our flag and why it is so special to live here in the UAE.
