Last week the Year One Pirates pilled onto three ships that looked a bit like buses and travelled to the Corniche to have a Pirate Adventure.
We followed treasure maps to find Captain Pats treasure, we built sand castles that any pirate king or queen would be proud to live in, we filled containers with salty sea water, we paddled in the same waters the Pirate Pats sails his ship in and we ate ice-cream just like any good pirate would on a sunny beach day. Then we had our lunch in the sun and played on the pirate ship before heading back as very sleepy pirates to school.
Thank you everyone who came along to our Pirate Adventure. We loved it!
Welcome to Year One at Al Yasmina Academy. Our classes are Sparrows, Larks, Cuckoos, Doves and Robins. We will use this space to share a selection of what is happening in Year One.

Paint like a Pirate
Last week early one morning we picked up a t-shirt, grabbed a paint brush and pulled on an apron.
What were we going to do???
We were making Pirate T-Shirts! We were very creative and preserved because painting a pirate on a t-shirt isn't easy at all. Our mums, dads and nanny's came in to help us and we are super proud of our t-shirts. Thanks everyone for coming along to help us, we just love having our families in our classroom for DT mornings.

National Day in Sparrows
It was a wonderfull National Day in Sparrows. They all look wonderful in their red, green, white and black. The Sparrows learnt the seven Emirates song, were creative, did a quiz and drew some camels. Sparrows also enjoyed sharing all of the food Year One brought in to share with each other!
National Day in Larks
Larks had a wonderful National Day. We were creative in our classroom making hats, finger print painting flags, making flag hand prints, learning the Seven Emirates song, and making a great collage of Ras al Khaimah for our house competition. During the day we all talked about why we love the UAE and everything we have done here. Check out our photos below.

Coming up
Coming up this week in Year 1 we are going to be...
writing rhyme and pattern poems in the same style as Mrs Pirate.
learning how to find half of a shape.
give instructions to a beebot.
Remember we have our DT t-shirt painting morning on the 6th of December and our Pirate Adventure to the Corniche on the 7th December.
Left and Right
In our computing lessons we need to know our left and right.
Here is a song we can use to practise our left and right.
Learning our left and right is something we need to practise all the time, if you know a Sparrow, Lark, Cuckoo, Dove or Robin make sure to quiz them on their left and right, the more we practise finding our left and right the better we will get at remembering.

Wrapping up Science for Term 1.
We have been very busy learning all about animals including humans this term. To finish our science topic we worked together to make posters about an animal. We had to find the correct information for our animal and present it in a poster with a title. Then we shared our poster with the class.
We were working on our reading, speaking and listening skills as well as our science.
It is the first time we have made posters in Year 1, we think we did a pretty good job. Let us know what you think of our posters.

Innovation Week
This week in the UAE it is innovation week.
Pirate Pat had a problem this week and we needed to be innovative and find a solution to Pirate Pat's problem.
Pirate Pat had lost his treasure on the island and with his wooden leg it was to difficult for him to walk back and find his treasure. We had to think innovatively and create a solution for Pirate Pat so he could have his treasure back.
We designed robots and then made a code to tell them how to get around the island. The robot couldn't go through swamps or lakes, it could only go forwards, go backwards, turn left and turn right.
Have a look at us working innovatively on a solution for Pirate Pat.
Our codes looked like F F F TR F F TL F F. Can you figure out the code?
In our shared area this week we also saw children being innovative making a vehicle big enough for all of the children to fit. We couldn't decide if it was a car, bus, train or bike. What do you think?

Coming Up
Last week was busy!
And this week is too!
In the Year One classrooms we are going to be writing with inspiration from the book Mrs Pirate by Nick Sharratt. We are going to be focusing on punctuating a sentence with a capital letter and a full stop. Some of us have been finding it tricky to remember to do this, so this week is our week to learn and practise.
In Maths we are going to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and learn about doubling numbers to 10. There are lots of youtube videos for counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. During the week we will share some of our favourites with you.
In mindup this week we are learning to mindfully breathe, listen, see and smell.
This week we are starting our ICT unit all about bee-bot programming. This week we will start to learn about directions. Keep checking in with us to see when we get the bee-bots out later this term.
Parents of Year 1 don't forget we have out DT open morning coming up on the 6th of December and our Pirate Adventure trip on the 7th December.

House Day 2016
House day was so much fun! We painted pictures, made chants, added to our new house blog, made astronaut costumes, built towers from spaghetti and marshmallows, played silent communication games, did an obstacle course, had a go at the wizard station and enjoyed ourselves with our whole primary school.
We were all (children and teachers) exhausted by the end of the day!
We all have a few thank you messages...
Thank you to Mr Cheetham for organising our house day.
Thank you to our teachers for running such great activities.
Thank you to the other teachers in our house who helped us out when things were tricky.
Thank you to the big kids, we loved spending the day with you and we could do so much more because you helped us. And we were so excited when you told us we were great drawers, runners, painters and so much more.

Have you heard about Mrs Pirate?
Have you heard about Mrs Pirate?
She really loves to shop, although it is surprising to see what she finds to buy. Things like a patch for her eye, buttons for her coat and even a sailing boat.
This week Year One have started looking at Mrs Pirate by Nick Sharratt.
We have been putting actions to the story as we read it and we have been trying to remember what Mrs Pirate buys next. We learnt that some pages in this book rhyme and that the words have lots of our phase 3 phonics sounds in them.
Check us out in these picture on a hunt for rhyming words and phonics sounds. We have really enjoyed reading this picture book.
Check in next week to see how we will use this picture book to inspire us to write.

We are busy being authors
We have been putting a lot of work into making our own books. Our story's are based on the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' only there are different characters, settings and events. Watch out for the naughty sharks, dragons, mermaids and pirates in our stories.
Sometimes you've got to breathe a little...
Sometimes learning is hard.
Sometimes thinking is hard.
Sometimes our brain gets overloaded and we just need to stop.
Sometimes you've just got to breathe a little.
Sometimes you've just got to take time to be a little mindful.
(Leave us a question in the comments. Maybe ask us how to just breathe a little)

We need your help!
Year One want to make mindful breathing wands in our shared area.
To do this we need to collect cardboard tubes. Do you have any finished glad wrap, toilet rolls, kitchen roll or anything else with a cardboard tube?
Please pass these tubes on to any of the Year 1 teachers.
When we begin to make our mindful breathing wands we will share them with you.
Mystery Readers!
The Cuckoos and Sparrows had a mystery pirate reader last week. All of the children had an amazing time listening to the mystery reader and really enjoyed having a pirate read them a story and show them a bit about pirates.
Thanks mystery reader, we loved having you along.
If you would like to be a mystery reader please let us know by emailing your class teacher.
